Severed dog heads prompt $5K reward

PETA is offering a $5,000 reward to help authorities find whoever left the severed heads of two dogs on the porch of a Madison County family.

The heads were found Nov. 23 and 24 on the front steps of the house in the small Georgia town of Hull.

"My sister didn't even go to work the first night because she was so shook up about it," Zachary Osburn told the Augusta Chronicle. Osburn, 20, shares the home with his sister and his girlfriend. She thought her own dog had been killed, but that turned out not to be the case. The next day as Osburn was leaving home for work, he found a second dog's head.

The Madison County’s Sheriff’s Office is investigating the bizarre incident, but the motive remains a mystery.

“Animal abusers are cowards,” said PETA director Martin Mersereau. “They take their issues out on the most defenseless beings available to them. Area residents have good reason to be concerned. According to law-enforcement agencies and leading mental-health professionals, perpetrators of violent acts against animals are often repeat offenders who pose a serious threat to all animals — including humans.”

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Lt. Jimmy Patton of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office at 706-795-6202.
