Two men accused of robbing maintenance workers at gunpoint were caught Friday after leading police on a chase and crashing on I-285 at I-20 Friday afternoon, Sandy Springs police said.

Eric Justin Patterson, 17, and Antwon Deshawn Earls, 18, of College Park, were arrested after crashing a white Mazda and running from police, Sgt. Ron Momon said. The Georgia State Patrol and Atlanta police assisted with locating the two men, Momon said.

The string of incidents began when two maintenance workers were confronted and robbed at gunpoint shortly after 11 a.m. at the Park Terrace Apartments on Carpenter Drive, Momon said. The maintenance workers told police two men robbed them of their wallets, cash and cell phones.

The robbery suspects left the complex in the Mazda, which had a temporary tag, according to police. A Sandy Springs officer tried to stop the car on Roswell Road, but the Mazda instead got on I-285 westbound.

After crashing the Mazda at I-20, Patterson and Earls ran, police said.

“A foot pursuit ensued with one suspect being apprehended,” Momon said in an emailed statement. “A second suspect was caught a short time after fleeing to a nearby neighborhood.”

Patterson and Earls were charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and fleeing to elude, Sgt. Forrest Bohannon said in a press release Friday afternoon. Both men will be booked in the Fulton County Jail.
