A GBI agent’s shotgun, body armor and ammunition were taken during a smash-and-grab burglary in Buckhead early Tuesday.

At 3 a.m., a security guard found five cars broken into in a parking garage being used by the Holiday Inn Express and Suites, according to an Atlanta police report.

The GBI agent, who was staying at the hotel on Sidney Marcus Boulevard, reported a Remington 870 shotgun, Dell laptop, body armor and a black bag with ammunition were stolen from his vehicle, said Atlanta Police spokesman Officer Ralph Woolfolk.

The agent faces possible suspension or docking of pay because the loss of the gear violates policy that the items be secured in the vehicle, said Agent Scott Dutton, spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The gear should have been secured in a lock box in the vehicle, Dutton said. The agent also lost a Taser.

“Unfortunately these things have happened before, which is the reason for the additional security measures,” Dutton said. “Unfortunately the agent didn’t take the extra steps.”

The parking garage had working security cameras, Woolfolk said. No other details were released.
