A crash between a dirt bike and a car Friday in southwest Atlanta left one person dead and two people injured, the Georgia State Patrol said.

The dirt bike was traveling northbound on McDaniel Street, went through the intersection at Whitehall Street and struck a Hyundai Sonata on the driver’s side, the GSP said.

Three people — the dirt bike driver and two people inside the Sonata — were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. The dirt bike driver died at the hospital, the GSP said. That person’s name and age were not released. The conditions of the people inside the Sonata were not known.

A witness to the accident told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution the crash came at the end of a police chase. The GSP and Atlanta police did not confirm that a chase happened.

Shay Willis, the witness, said she had just pulled into a gas station in the area when she heard the growl of a speeding dirt bike.

She said she looked up and saw police chasing the bike as it approached the Sonata and had to quickly brake. The bike’s driver stood up, presumably to stop, but instead slid into the Sonata, Willis said.

“They were going so fast, I seen him hit the car, and he flipped over the car and hit the concrete,” she said. “And I lost it cause I’ve never seen nothing like that before.”

The crash remains under investigation.
