Paulding school employee quarantined after contact with coronavirus

While there is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus, the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising individuals to take the following steps to stay safe.

An employee of a Paulding County elementary school will be self-quarantined at home after coming in contact with someone with the coronavirus.

McGarity Elementary School in Hiram has no coronavirus cases, Principal Karla Dodgen wrote in a letter to parents Monday. There are no confirmed cases of the virus anywhere in Paulding.

But a McGarity employee came in contact with a someone with the virus in an adjacent county, Dodgen said. Neighboring Polk County has a confirmed case of the coronavirus, according to state leaders.

Fulton County schools are closed today after a teacher tested positive. Officials will decide later today if schools will remain closed tomorrow. Firefighters who responded to the school on Friday, when the teacher fell ill, are now also in quarantine.

“Even though the employee shows no symptoms of COVID-19, as someone who has been in contact with a confirmed case the employee has been advised to self -quarantine for the next 14 days as a precaution,” Dodgen’s letter states. “The  employee will not be at school during this time.”

On Sunday, the custodial staff cleaned the school with an anti-viral disinfectant, Dodgen said.

Last week, Paulding County announced a public health exercise that was to have been held later this month has been delayed following the coronavirus outbreak in Georgia. Agencies that were scheduled to participate in the March 26 drill are instead focused on coronavirus response.
