A former Newton County employee was arrested in connection with the theft of about $19,400 in business license fees, officials said.

Carolyn Callwood of Conyers was charged with 174 counts of theft by receiving, Newton Sheriff Ezell Brown said Friday.

From January 2013 to October 2015, Callwood collected the fees but did not deposit them, Brown said.

Supervisors in Newton County Development Services, where Callwood worked as the impact fee coordinator, alerted the sheriff’s office of the alleged theft, Brown said. Officials from the Newton district attorney’s office assisted sheriff’s officials in the investigation.

Callwood surrendered June 17, posted bond and was released.
