A Newton County mental health home caregiver is being accused of beating her sole client to death.

Cornelius Richardson-Bethea, 44, was arrested Monday and charged with murder for the killing of Susan Walter, a 47-year-old mentally challenged woman in her charge, authorities said.

Newton County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call early Saturday morning at Richardson-Bethea’s home in the 10000 block of Strathinge Trail near Covington, sheriff’s spokeswoman Deputy Courtney Morrison said.

“Deputies found the victim’s body with bruises all over … and around her head and shoulders,” Morrison said.

Walter is Richardson-Bethea’s only client, and there was no one else in the home when deputies arrived, authorities said.

“The death was ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma,” Morrison said.

Richardson-Bethea was taken into custody without incident, and at a first appearance Monday morning, was denied bond, authorities said.

Richardson-Bethea remains in the Newton County Jail.
