Police said the driver shot outside a Doraville recycling plant last week remains in the hospital in serious condition.

A driver shot last week in a road-rage incident outside a Doraville recycling center remains in the hospital with injuries that are more severe than police first thought.

Investigators said 59-year-old James Gilliland of Dallas was shot once in the abdomen during an altercation with a man over debris that fell off his truck Friday outside Metro Green Recycling on Pleasantdale Road.

After being confronted, Gilliland allegedly pulled a crowbar on 31-year-old Jamarsa Williams of Atlanta, who shot him, according to Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera.

Williams was arrested at the scene and booked on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, jail records show.

Charges against Gilliland are still possible, Pihera said Thursday, but detectives “wanted to give him more time to heal” before questioning him.

“After he was shot, he was walking around and moved his truck off the scale so we didn't think his injuries were very significant,” she said. “But it turned out to be worse than they first thought.”

Gilliland remains at Gwinnett Medical Center in serious condition, Pihera said. Williams is being held without bond at the Gwinnett County jail, records show.
