A wild scene played out Friday outside a recycling center in Doraville, where some fallen debris from a truck led to a road-rage shooting and a man in the hospital.
Thanks to several witnesses and video, Gwinnett County police were able to piece together the incident that escalated after an argument between two drivers outside Metro Green Recycling on Pleasantdale Road.
After a confrontation just before noon, a truck driver ended up pulling a crowbar on another driver, who proceeded to shoot the truck driver once in the abdomen, police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a statement.
The alleged shooter, 31-year-old Jamarsa Williams of Atlanta, was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated assault.
Police said the victim, 59-year-old James Gilliland of Dallas, was taken to the hospital. Pihera said Monday he remains in the hospital with serious injuries and could face charges.
According to police, Williams became angry when something fell out of Gilliland’s truck and followed him into the recycling center’s parking lot. At that point, Gilliland pulled onto a vehicle scale while Williams parked a short distance away and then approached, police said.
Gilliland then grabbed the crowbar from his truck and began hitting Williams with it, the statement said. Williams retreated to his car, got a gun and went back and shot Gilliland, according to police.
Despite being shot, Gilliland was able to move his truck off the scale and wait for an ambulance and police.
The video and 911 call are not being released at this time, Pihera said.
