A man shot by Oconee County deputies Thursday has been released from the hospital and arrested Wednesday on aggravated assault and other charges.

Authorities said John Martin had locked himself in a bedroom shortly before deputies heard the sound of a gun loading and the sliding of the rack.

Deputies were responding to the Dials Mill Spur address in reference to a domestic situation.

When deputies unlocked the bedroom door, Martin allegedly aimed the gun at deputies, but did not shoot.

Cpl. Adam Thrower shot Martin in the chest, causing him to fall to the floor and drop the gun, the sheriff’s office said.

He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Athens Regional Medical Center and warrants were issued for his arrest.

Martin booked into Oconee County Jail and taken to its medical unit. He faces three counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, two counts of third degree cruelty to children, one count of simple battery and one count of criminal trespass.

He was held without bond Wednesday and no court date has been set.
