A man accused of shooting at an officer after a domestic disturbance call in Auburn remained in the hospital Monday afternoon, officials confirmed.
Stephen Frank Nichols, 46, is in serious condition after Sunday’s shooting, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said. Nichols allegedly fired at an officer, who returned fire and injured him.
Police were called to a home on the 300 block of Wages Road. A woman at the home told Officer Billy Willis that Nichols ran into a wooded area, Miles said. Sgt. Jeff Scott found Nichols after searching the area.

“(He) attempted to provide false information by pretending to not be the individual who (Scott) was looking for,” Miles said.
That’s when Nichols pulled out a gun and fired at Scott, officials said. Scott returned fire and struck Nichols multiple times.
Nichols was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center. The officers were not injured.
Nichols faces charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
