Multiple agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, were on the scene of an officer-involved shooting that shut down the westbound I-20 ramp to Turner Hill Road in DeKalb County Tuesday.
Diondre David Evans, 22, was being sought by police for an alleged domestic violence incident, which occurred earlier in the day in Conyers.
Evans was facing charges of battery, criminal trespass and obstructing a 911 call for the domestic incident, Nelly Miles, a spokesman for the GBI said in a press statement.
The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office put out a BOLO over the radio for the vehicle and Evans. The BOLO also stated that Evans possibly had a weapon.
Sheriff’s deputies tried, unsuccessfully, to pull over the car Evans was driving. A lookout was issued for him. That’s when Conyers police got involved.
Evans pulled over on the Turner Hill exit ramp of I-20 West in DeKalb County, Miles said.
“There was no vehicle chase of any sort,” Conyers police spokeswoman Kim Lucas told Channel 2 Action News. “It appears the vehicle did stop. Very quickly, shots were fired and our officer was able to notify us to get an ambulance en route.”
A deputy with the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office also participated in the traffic stop. Once the vehicle was stopped, the officer and deputy confirmed his identity and tried to get Evans out.
The deputy tased Evans when he tried to get away, Miles said. The officer then fired multiple gun shots at Evans after he continued to move his vehicle.
Channel 2 reported five bullet holes could be seen on the vehicle.
Evans was taken to Grady Hospital, where he was treated for gun shot wounds to his arm and neck. He was listed in stable condition Tuesday night.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for any action they deem appropriate, Miles said.
