Clayton County police shot and killed a 23-year-old man who ran from and aimed a gun at them, authorities said.

Just after 4:30 p.m. Monday, police responded to a domestic dispute at a home in the 1500 block of Cheryl Leigh Drive in Riverdale, Clayton police Chief Michael Register said.

As officers conducted their investigation, a man who was involved in the dispute and later identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as Jabril Robinson ran to another house and forced himself inside, police said. The homeowner “forcefully removed” Robinson from the home, called 911 and told dispatchers he saw the man run behind another residence along Highway 314 and Kings Road.

“It appears [Robinson] attempted to force his way into the rear of that residence as well but was unsuccessful,” Clayton police Sgt. Ashanti Marbury said.

When officers got to the second home, they saw Robinson behind the third home. According to police, he was holding a loaded gun and aiming it at them.

Despite several orders to drop the weapon, Robinson refused to comply with officers, Marbury said. He and the officers exchanged gunfire and at least one shot hit Robinson, Register said.

Robinson was taken to Southern Regional Hospital, where he later died, GBI spokesman Scott Dutton told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, Dutton said.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

“The officers were lucky that they were not shot,” Register said. “And that homeowner appears to be very lucky that the suspect did not — with a weapon — force their way into the house.”

Highway 314 and Kings Road were temporarily closed Monday evening as authorities investigated the shooting, Channel 2 Action News reported.

At one point, news helicopter footage showed at least 10 police vehicles at the scene.

The GBI is investigating the shooting.
