A Marietta man was arrested Tuesday after leading police on a chase that ended with him crashing into a Smyrna officer’s patrol vehicle, authorities said.

The incident began shortly after noon when officers received a traffic complaint and tried to stop a black Mercedes-Benz sedan near Hawthorne Avenue and Hawthorne Circle, Smyrna police spokesman Sgt. Louis Defense said.

The driver, identified as 63-year-old James Henry Maben, refused to pull over and led police on a short chase through Smyrna, authorities said.

According to Maben’s arrest warrant, he ignored the officer’s siren and reached speeds of 90 mph on Hawthorne Avenue with pedestrians nearby. The posted speed limit on the two-lane residential street is 35 mph.

The pursuit came to an end when he ran into a police car near Dixie Avenue and officers arrested him, authorities said.
