A Clayton County man drove his ex-girlfriend to Grady Memorial Hospital after allegedly setting her on fire, police said, then drove off in her car without telling medical staff of her injuries.

Police said Mervin Woodard, 39, doused the woman with gasoline and set her on fire. It is unclear who extinguished the fire.

The ex-girlfriend, 35, told Clayton County police she was set on fire during a fight with Woodard at her home in Ellenwood. She suffered third-degree burns on more than 25 percent of her body.

Woodard and the woman have a child together, but no children were home when the fight happened, police said.

She remained in the hospital’s intensive care unit Thursday in a medically induced coma, police said.

Her name has not been released.

Warrants for aggravated assault, aggravated battery and arson in the third degree were issued Wednesday for Woodard’s arrest.

Woodard was last seen driving the woman’s black 2014 Toyota Camry from Grady Hospital.

Anyone with information on Woodard’s whereabouts are asked to call Clayton County Police Department at 770-477-3747.
