A 63-year-old Gwinnett County man died Friday afternoon while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico on a trip to Florida, authorities said.

Surfers spotted Rogelio Moreno Gaitan of Lawrenceville floating face down in the water off Destin, about 30 or 40 yards from a restaurant along Scenic Highway 98, Okaloosa County deputies told WMBB.

First responders pulled Gaitan from the water and tried to resuscitate him, but they were unsuccessful, authorities said.

Family members told police Gaitan had been swimming alone before the drowning.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office told Channel 2 Action News that "in an abundance of caution" the courthouse, located on North McDonough Street in Decatur, was closed for more than an hour.
