A week after a 7-year-old boy was accidentally shot by an 8-year-old in Griffin, the injured child’s father was arrested, police said.

Tremell Reives was arrested Monday and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Griffin police said in a news release. The children were left at a home at the Griffin Crossings apartment complex off West McIntosh Road with a neighbor while he was at work.

His son was shot in the stomach as the two children played with a .45-caliber handgun they found on the top shelf of a closet, the release said. The kids had to use a kitchen chair to get it.

The child is expected to make a “full recovery,” Griffin police Sgt. Chris Wilson previously told AJC.com.

Reives told police the gun belonged to him while being interviewed, the release said.

His name doesn’t show up in the Georgia Department of Corrections online database, so the felony he was previously convicted of is unclear. AJC.com has reached out to Griffin police for more information.

AJC.com has also reached out to the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office for more information about Reives’ booking.
