Road rage may have fueled a shooting outside a busy Coweta County shopping center Sunday night, authorities said.
The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office was called about 5:30 p.m. to the parking lot of the shopping center on Bullsboro Drive in Newnan, which houses a Five Below and a PetSmart. One person was shot and taken to an area hospital by helicopter, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Investigators think the shooting carried over from a “road rage incident” between two couples on a nearby interstate, Coweta sheriff’s Capt. John Kennedy said.
“The incident escalated to a point where shots were fired, and one individual was struck,” he said in a news release. “The individual is receiving medical treatment.”
Investigator Jacob Herbert told Channel 2 that two guns were recovered at the scene, and it’s believed both couples fired shots.
“We do believe both parties had weapons,” Herbert said. “We did recover two weapons on scene. However, charges have yet to be filed because we are still investigating who had the guns and who fired.”
The victim is in stable condition, Channel 2 reported. Herbert said everyone involved has been identified by authorities but they haven’t released the names publicly.
An investigation is ongoing.
