A Fulton County grand jury has accused a man of trying to use a bogus state agency to steal computers.
Michael Anthony Dix was indicted last week on charges of criminal attempt to commit theft by taking, allegedly by attempting to trick a company into allowing him to rent $13,000 worth of laptop computers.
Prosecutors say Dix placed the order for the five laptops under the name “Seth Eidt,” who supposedly worked for the fictitious Georgia “Department of Public Safety and Corrections.”
GBI agents learned of the scheme and cooperated with the rental company to arrange delivery of the computers on Nov. 14.
When the computers were delivered to the Peachtree Street location listed on the rental order, GBI agents were there.
Dix answered the cell phone listed on the rental order when a call was made to the number, and agents arrested him with the order in hand, authorities said.
If convicted, Dix could spend up to five years in prison and pay a fine of up to $50,000.
