Southwest Atlanta residents scheduled a town hall meeting Thursday night to discuss what could be done to stem an increase in break-ins, shootings, robberies and other crimes in their neighborhood.

Two hours before it was to start, not far from the site of the meeting at Cornerstone Church on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard, a man was shot.

The victim, who was not identified, was hit in the side in the 400 block of Willard Avenue SW around 5:30 p.m.

He was conscious, alert and breathing and was transported to a hospital, Atlanta police spokesman Officer Ralph Woolfolk said.

Residents said they wanted to work with city leaders and public safety officials to find ways to make their community safer. They invited elected officials and police to hear their concerns.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner and other officers told people at the meeting what they are doing to reduce crime but said they also need help from residents, Channel 2 Action News reported.
