The Gwinnett County taxi driver robbed and stabbed nearly two dozen times Monday morning is expected to survive, police said.
Miguel Hernandez, 45, was found bleeding along Boggs Road in Duluth around 2:15 a.m. Monday. Gwinnett County police believe he was attacked and stabbed “several times” by 16-year-old Luis Rojas, who stole Hernandez’s cab after he was summoned to pick up a fare at the nearby Autumn Vista Apartments. Police released Rojas’ name because he is being charged as an adult.
Authorities did not release specifics about Hernandez’s wounds, but family members told Channel 2 Action News he was stabbed 20 times — in the chest, neck, face and back.
“We’re so happy that he’s still alive,” sister Marcela Santos said.
Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Deon Washington said Wednesday afternoon that Hernandez was still at Grady Memorial Hospital but had been upgraded to stable condition.
About two hours after a blood-covered Hernandez was discovered by passersby, his taxi was found crashed and abandoned more than 5 miles away. Rojas was later arrested at a house in Norcross, Washington said.
Rojas is being held at the Rockdale Youth Detention Center on charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault. It was unclear if police believe he — or someone else — summoned Hernandez to the scene of the attack.
