A Lilburn man has been sentenced to life plus five years in prison after fatally shooting his wife in 2015, prosecutors said.
Rupert Clarke was convicted of murder and other charges Friday in Gwinnett Superior Court, according to a media release from the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office. The weeklong trial was over the slaying of Rosemarie Lebert, who was shot several times at home. Clarke was acquitted of aggravated assault.
Clarke and Lebert had marital problems over many years, according to the release. Clarke also carried a gun in a fanny pack with him at all times, including when he was in the house alone.
Clarke and his wife were arguing over finances when he shot her, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.
After he shot his wife, Clarke went upstairs, removed the magazine from the gun, and threw it under the bed, according to the release, and then hid the gun behind a dresser. He later surrendered to police.
The couple’s son, Alex, was at home at the time of the shooting and saw Clarke standing over his mother with a gun. He called 911 and tried to revive the woman with chest compressions.
