An Atlanta-area couple is being charged with not paying state taxes on money they allegedly swindled from state-funded Medicaid.

Derrell Jackson and Shayla Darrington-Jackson were indicted last week in Gwinnett County for Medicaid fraud and in Fulton County for tax evasion.

The couple owns an in-home mental health counseling service for youth diagnosed with severe behavioral disorders.

State prosecutors said the couple received more than $600,000 in Medicaid funds in 2008 and 2009 by submitting false billing.

The Fulton indictment states that they failed to file state tax returns or pay taxes on the income from Georgia Medicaid in that time frame.

An assistant attorney general will prosecute the case.

Jackson and Darrington-Jackson each face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000 on one count of fraud and one count of tax evasion, authorities said.
