A Georgia man who escaped prison in 1979 has been captured, Laurel County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post Thursday.
Billy Burchfield, 67, spent more than 37 years living in Kentucky as his dead cousin, Harold Arnold, before detectives Jason Back and James Sizemore captured him at his home Wednesday night.
Burchfield escaped and traveled to Laurel County to live, according to the post.
Georgia officials figured out where Burchfield's was and worked with Laurel County Sheriff's Office to arrest him, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.
Kentucky State Police fingerprinted Burchfield under his alias and found a match under his real name, according to the Facebook post.
Burchfield was held Thursday in the Laurel County Detention Facility without bond. Georgia officials plan to extradite him.
He is one of at least two Georgia fugitives to be captured this year. Robert Stackowitz was caught in Connecticut after filing for social security in May.
Stackowitz was originally arrested for robbery by force in 1966 and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. He escaped from the prison infirmary.
Stackowitz’s attorney told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution his client is too sick to be extradited to Georgia.
Carroll County District Attorney Pete Skandalakis said he doesn’t plan to file additional charges for Stackowitz’s escape.
