A Troup County sheriff’s deputy dashcam video shows an exchange of gunfire early Monday that left a man wounded in his carport and a deputy calling for help.
As the video released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation begins, a man identified as Terry Caldwell waves, points and screams unintelligibly. He’s sitting in his carport, perched on a lawn chair.
Troup County Deputy Stephen D’Angelo, who has just pulled into Caldwell’s driveway, asks him what he has in his hands, and then what he has in his lap.
Caldwell bends over, grabs an “AK47-style pistol” from the ground and shoots twice. The muzzle flashes are distinct in the black-and-white footage.
D’Angelo returns fire four times.
Caldwell, struck twice, sits back down in his chair. He takes a casual sip from a canned beverage.
“I need some help over here,” D’Angelo says into his radio. “Shots fired.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the early Monday morning incident at Caldwell’s home on Hamilton Road in LaGrange, during which Caldwell was shot in the elbow and thigh. The 60-year-old was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with “what appear to be” non-life threatening injuries, GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang said.
D’Angelo was not injured.
The dashcam footage was release within hours of the shooting, which happened at about 12:05 a.m. Lang said authorities responded to Caldwell’s home after someone called 911 to report that “their neighbor was shooting a gun.”
No other details were provided.
“The GBI will conduct a thorough investigation to determine what occurred during the incident,” Lang said. “When the investigation is complete it will be turned over to the district attorney for any action he deems appropriate.”
Troup County is about 70 miles southwest of Atlanta, not far from the Alabama line.
