GBI: Bartow County man shot, killed after pointing gun at deputies

Jan 9, 2016

A Bartow County man was shot and killed late Friday after pointing a gun at deputies responding to a domestic violence call, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

GBI spokesman Scott Dutton said two Bartow County sheriff’s deputies responded to a home on the 4500 block of Bartow Carver Road in Acworth around 11:15 p.m. The deputies were speaking with the 911 caller outside the home when “an individual identified as the complainant’s boyfriend came out of the house armed with a long gun,” Dutton said in an emailed statement.

Deputies “repeatedly” ordered the man — later identified as 50-year-old Andrew Earl Abernathy — to drop the weapon but he “advanced toward” them and raised the gun, the GBI said.

“The deputies fired multiple times, striking the individual,” Dutton said. “The deputies immediately called for emergency medical services and began performing life saving measures. The individual was transported to Cartersville Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.”

An autopsy will be performed at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur as part of the agency’s independent investigation, Dutton said.

Neither deputy involved in the incident was injured.
