A 59-year-old man has been charged with 30 counts of animal cruelty, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Billy Ray Shirley of Cumming was arrested following a call last Wednesday from a local hospital where Shirley was being treated for a medical condition, Forsyth sheriff spokesman Deputy Epifanio Rodriguez said Wednesday.

The call led the sheriff’s office to obtain a search warrant and search Shirley’s residence on Franklin Goldmine Road.

Deputies found 30 dogs in what Rodriguez said were “deplorable conditions.” One of the dogs was dead.

Shirley is currently being held at the Forsyth County Jail in lieu of $34,650 bond, Rodriguez said.
