Duluth police found drugs in the car of an impaired driver who hit a patrol car just moments after a Johns Creek officer arrested another person on a charge of driving under the influence, officials said Tuesday.
The incident started when officers stopped a Honda Accord speeding on State Bridge Road, near the Johns Creek-Duluth line.
The driver of the Accord, 27-year-old Chelsea Fletcher of Athens, admitted having two glasses of wine at a baby shower, Johns Creek police said in an incident report. She was arrested and placed in the back of a patrol car.
About the same time, Jarrett Mobley was driving a Hyundai Sonata eastbound on Pleasant Hill Road when he struck the rear end of the patrol car, which was parked on the right shoulder of the road, police said.
“The impact caused that police car to strike the second police car where the officer and DUI suspect were located,” police said. The officer and Fletcher were taken to Emory Johns Creek Hospital with minor injuries.
Duluth officers were called to an area near Pleasant Hill Road and Sweetbottom Drive. Mobley, 22, of Cumming, admitted to having two drinks at work and another somewhere else, according to a Duluth police incident report. Mobley told police he thought he was in the left inside lane when he was actually in the right outside lane. He said he was looking at his phone and did not realize he was not in his lane.
While waiting for medical service workers to arrive, a Duluth officer spotted “a small plastic bag containing a green leafy material that appeared to be marijuana” in the front passenger floorboard of Mobley’s vehicle, according to the report. At least two beer cans in the floorboard appeared to be damaged during the crash.
Mobley, who denied medical treatment, faces charges of driving under the influence, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and failure to maintain a lane.
