A Riverdale man was killed overnight after driving into the back of a tractor-trailer as it came to a stop in a construction zone on I-285, Atlanta police said Saturday.

Officers were called to the fatal wreck near Bolton Road in northwest Atlanta about 3 a.m., said Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. John Chafee.

According to police, a Ford Econoline van traveling south on the Perimeter struck the back of the truck as it slowed for construction traffic. The driver, identified as 39-year-old Jonas Jennings, died at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, but no charges are expected, Chafee said.

It was the second fatal wreck to occur on I-285 early Saturday. About 90 minutes earlier, a man driving in DeKalb County was killed when the driver next to him swerved into his lane to avoid something in the roadway, police said.

That prompted a chain-reaction crash that caused the man to leave the interstate and strike a tree on the side of the road.
