A DeKalb County school resource officer has undergone surgery and faces four to five months of recuperation after breaking his ankle when he intervened in a student brawl at Tucker High School.

The fight broke out Wednesday after dismissal time behind the school, Channel 2 Action News reported. Four students allegedly started throwing punches, and Officer Jarvis Brown and other school personnel intervened to break it up.

When Brown tried to restrain two students, he twisted his right ankle, causing broken bones that required surgery, Channel 2 reported.

“… The police officer who works at the school he got hit a couple times. He was taken away in a stretcher,” one student who witnessed the incident, Adia Reid, said.

Another student, Perlin Ramirez, said she had just seen Brown that morning.

“I just told him to be safe, and he was like, ‘thank you,’” Ramirez said. “And I’m like, wow. Who’d have thought that was going to happen?”

“I’m glad there wasn’t a weapon, and I’m glad it didn’t happen inside the school,” she said.

A DeKalb schools spokesperson said four students were suspended for 10 days and will have to appear in court on charges related to the fight.
