A 17-year-old boy made a 911 call that led Henry County authorities to an abandoned newborn, police said Monday.

“I would like to report a baby at the Davis Family Dentistry across from the emergency ambulance entrance of Piedmont [Henry Hospital]” in Stockbridge, the boy said during the 911 call, which was made about 5 a.m. Sunday from a Hudson Bridge Road Walmart pay phone. “This is not a joke. I promise. Please get there quick.”

Authorities found the infant at the dental office, Henry police Capt. Joey Smith said. The baby was at Piedmont in good condition, he said.

Police eventually found the child’s mother, a 16-year-old girl who had given birth to the baby about 2 a.m. Sunday. She underwent medical treatment, Smith said.

The girl and the 911 caller are not from Henry, he said. Smith did not specify where they were from or how they were connected.

Abandoning a child is a misdemeanor in Georgia. However, the state’s safe haven law allows mothers or anyone they choose to drop infants off at any hospital, health center or birthing center. Police told Channel 2 Action News the 16-year-old girl was with a friend when the baby was dropped off at the dental office.

Charges have not been filed in the case, which remains under investigation.

“At this time,” Smith said, “the case is being completed and detectives will meet with the appropriate prosecutors to determine if any charges will be filed.”
