A 17-year-old is in custody after allegedly shooting a father and 10-year-old boy during a robbery in Gwinnett County on Thursday morning, authorities said.

The incident began about 7 a.m. when officers spotted a “suspicious vehicle” while patrolling near Summer Wood Drive in unincorporated Snellville, Gwinnett police said in a news release. Officers were searching the area due to a car break-in nearby.

After they tried to pull the vehicle over, two suspects hopped out and ran away, the release said. One of them was identified by police as Jacobi Chomicki.

About 30 minutes later, police responded to a shooting on Countryside Way, which is about a half-mile from where the vehicle was abandoned, the release said. The homeowner and his son were found with gunshot wounds that were non-life-threatening.

The homeowner said he encountered Chomicki in his garage attempting to steal a bicycle, which led to a confrontation in which the teen shot the two before running away, the release said. He’s believed to have fired one gunshot, which went through the father’s leg and grazed the child, police told Channel 2 Action News.

As police set up a perimeter, a K-9 unit, aviation unit and small SWAT team arrived to help with the search, the release said. About 9 a.m., a K-9 tracked Chomicki to a vehicle parked behind a home on Lenora Road.

Chomicki was bitten by the K-9 during the arrest and was taken to police headquarters after being checked by first responders, the release said.

He’s suspected of several other crimes in Gwinnett, but police did not release details about those. He’s been booked into jail on two counts of armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of first-degree burglary and one count of kidnapping, theft and two weapon possession charges, jail records show.

A description of the other suspect was not provided.
