A retired Chamblee and MARTA police officer was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for child molestation convictions that involved a family member.

Kelless Twohearts Lory, 58, was convicted in DeKalb County Superior Court last week of two counts of aggravated child molestation and two counts of child molestation. Lory molested a 9-year-old girl from July 2011 to July 2012, prosecutors said. The crimes occurred after his retirement.

DeKalb Superior Court Judge Gail Flake criticized Lory from the bench at sentencing.

“You’ve certainly deprived her of the right to a safe and happy childhood,” the judge said. “The fact [that] you were a police officer has brought even more attention to this case, and unfortunately, has probably negatively impacted the reputation of police officers.”

Lory was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital last week after he drank an unknown substance from an over-the-counter vitamin bottle in the courtroom as the jury foreman read the verdict, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. The substance later was determined to be poisonous. He was released from Grady on Saturday, and now will be transferred to the Georgia Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
