A former DeKalb County corrections officer who went on the run after a statutory rape conviction in 2017 was captured by police in Southern California recently.

Charles Barry Pinckney, convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl at his home, was arrested by police in Corona, Calif., on Sept. 14, according to a statement from Fulton County Sheriff Ted Jackson on Tuesday.

Corona officers discovered Pinckney had fake bank cards and IDs that he was using to withdraw funds at a bank branch, Jackson said. Tellers determined Pinckney had fraudulent credentials and called authorities.

Pinckney was convicted in Fulton County in October 2017 of statutory rape, child molestation and sexual battery. During the trial, Pinckney was on bond and absconded days before his conviction. The trial continued in his absence.

“Investigators are convinced that Pinckney had help in order to avoid capture,” Jackson said.

In March, a $2,000 reward was offered for any information that led to his capture. It’s unclear whether the reward will be paid out to anyone.

When he is returned to the Fulton County Jail, Pinckney will be transferred to the Georgia Department of Corrections to serve up to 45 years in prison.
