A Smyrna man admitted in court on Wednesday attacking an adult relative with disabilities, officials say.
Aubrey James Glaze, 52, was charged with aggravated sexual battery, incest and other charges related to an April 25, 2015, attack on a family member, said Kim Isaza, a spokeswoman for the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office.
Glaze said he took advantage of an opportunity when he knew he would be alone with the victim, who immediately reported the assault.
DNA positively identified Glaze as the perpetrator, Isaza said.
As part of the investigation, Smyrna police seized Glaze’s cell phone, where they found images of child pornography. Glaze also pleaded guilty to seven counts of sexual exploitation of children for those images.
Assistant District Attorney Susan Treadaway, who prosecuted the case, said that though all crimes of this nature shock the community conscious, targeting a person with disabilities is particularly heinous.
“As is often the case with sexual predators, this defendant tried to psychologically manipulate his victim into remaining silent by telling her no one would believe her,” Treadway said.
The woman showed her courage when she stood up for herself and chose to be present at the hearing.
“And even though this defendant thought he could control the victim, it was ultimately she who showed her true strength by choosing to be present in court for the plea so she could witness the defendant’s admission of guilt and know that she is believed,” Treadway said.
Cobb Superior Court Judge C. LaTain Kell sentenced Glaze to 15 years to serve in prison without parole. Once he is released, he will be subject to sex-offender probation and monitoring for the rest of his life.
