A Cobb County man will spend three decades in state prison for assaulting and nearly killing his wife, officials say.
Rodney Tyrone Mack, 46, of Powder Springs, pleaded guilty on Monday to aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Kim Isaza, a spokeswoman for the District Attorney’s Office, said.
Mack said he and his wife were fighting in the predawn hours of Oct. 23, 2015, when he grabbed a 12-gauge shotgun and pointed it at her.
He threatened to kill her, then fired a shot.
His wife pushed the barrel of the gun away and then fell to the floor. Mack then broke her ribs by hitting her with the shotgun, before firing another shot that struck her arm.
She had called 911 and left the line open, allowing dispatchers to hear what was happening and quickly send police to the couple’s home. On the 911 recording, the woman can be heard begging for her life, Isaza said.
Assistant District Attorney Paul Camarillo said the investigation showed Mack’s violence toward his wife escalated over time, though she hadn’t reported it.
“I believe he would have killed her if Cobb police had not arrived so quickly,” Camarillo said.
After accepting the guilty plea, Cobb Superior Court Judge Adele Grubbs sentenced Mack to 40 years, with 30 years to serve in prison and the balance on probation.
