Gwinnett County police have identified the man accused of engaging in “lewd acts” at a local park, officials said Tuesday, but have not filed criminal charges due to his mental condition.

Authorities first issued an alert about the incident on July 7, about a month after the suspect was allegedly spotted making “several lewd comments and gestures” toward a juvenile at Mountain Park Park near Lilburn. Gwinnett County police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said Tuesday that the department was able to identify the suspect thanks to tips from the public.

Detectives determined, however, that the man “suffers from several mental conditions,” and he was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center on Monday for “an involuntary committal,” Pihera said.

“Though there is evidence that a criminal act occurred,” Pihera said, “no charges will be filed at this time.”

Pihera said the man’s name will not be released. He is in his mid-40s, she said.
