No charges after fetus found in freezer

Sept 4, 2012

No charges are expected after a cleaning crew found a fetus in a freezer last month, Alpharetta police said Tuesday.

“After an exhaustive investigation, it was determined the mother had a miscarriage in the second trimester of the pregnancy,” George Gordon, police spokesman, said in an emailed statement. “The mother placed the non-viable fetus in the freezer because she did not have the financial means for a proper disposal or burial.”

The police findings correspond with the investigation by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, Gordon said.

The fetus, which had been placed in a shoebox that was left in the freezer, was found Aug. 3 in an empty apartment off Webb Bridge Road, police previously said. The prior residents of the apartment had moved out a few days before the discovery.

No further details were released in the case.
