A residential burglary suspect surrendered to Atlanta police Thursday after a foot chase that ended in a second-floor Buckhead hotel room.
The Towne Place Suites hotel at 800 Sidney Marcus Blvd. was evacuated just before the lunch hour as authorities, including a SWAT team, searched for the man, later identified as Ulyesse Cleckley.
Cleckley, 20, was charged with burglary, criminal attempt burglary, criminal damage to property, theft by receiving and obstruction, according to APD spokesman John Chafee. “More charges are possible,” the spokesman said.
Police were responding to calls about two burglaries in the same residential area - one on Pine Tree Road and another on Lenox Road - when they noticed Cleckley riding a bicycle near the first location.
The suspect jumped off the bike and started running after he saw the officers, who chased him across Ga. 400. Cleckley eventually made it to the Towne Place Suites, which is a Marriott property.
Police said that before running into the hotel, the suspect put his hand in his waistband as if he had a weapon, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Cleckley entered one of the hotel’s second-floor rooms and locked the door as a maid who was cleaning the room left, police said. Police reached him by phone and Cleckley eventually surrendered. Police did not recover a weapon.
During the hotel search, guests were evacuated to a nearby Country Inn & Suites.
The Georgia State Patrol temporarily blocked the ramp from Ga. 400 southbound to Sidney Marcus during the search.
