When police tried to arrest a patient at the Veteran Affairs medical center in DeKalb County on Wednesday afternoon, his quick departure prompted an alert on the nearby Emory University campus, officials said.

The unidentified patient, who is not armed, had not been found as of 6:45 p.m., school spokeswoman Holly Korschun said in an emailed statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

During the search, a “shelter in place” order was issued for the Emory campus. The all-clear was given at 5:40 p.m. and the campus has returned to normal operations.

The patient left the VA facility on Clairmont Road when DeKalb police arrived to arrest him, spokeswoman Shiera Campbell confirmed. He was wanted on a probation violation, Emory police said.

The Emory campus is less than a mile from the medical center.

Emory, DeKalb and the VA medical center police departments are continuing to monitor the area, Korschun said.
