Police are searching for a gray SUV after someone inside the vehicle shot a library security guard in the head Tuesday evening in southwest Atlanta.

A security guard was shot in the head Tuesday night as she was leaving a Fulton County library branch in southwest Atlanta.

The 42-year-old woman was leaving work at the Cleveland Avenue branch about 8 p.m. when someone opened fire on her vehicle, Atlanta police said. Bullets also damaged the vehicle of another guard leaving work at the same time.

She was conscious and stable when emergency crews responded to take her to a hospital, according to police. An update on her condition was not provided Wednesday morning.

Officer Steve Avery, an Atlanta police spokesman, said investigators learned the two guards walked out of the library together and got into their separate cars.

“As (the woman) was driving out, suspects in a gray SUV began to shoot at the vehicles (she) and the other guard were in,” he said in a statement.

It is unclear if either guard was targeted.

The shooting was one of two in the area police investigated overnight. A mother called 911 about 2 a.m. Wednesday after she heard gunshots outside her home in the 1500 block of Pinehurst Drive.

She and her five children were sleeping and did not see who was shooting, she told police.

“A number of shots struck the house but nobody was injured,” Avery said.

It is unknown if the shots were fired from a vehicle, he said. Investigators do not believe the two shootings are related.

Both incidents remain under investigation, and no suspects were in custody Wednesday.
