A 26-year-old man’s body was found Sunday in the woods behind a Wal-Mart/Home Depot shopping center in Dalton, police said.

Colin Chavez Shropshire of LaFayette had last been seen at the Cliffs Apartments on Shugart Road around 1:30 a.m. Friday, Dalton police spokesman Bruce Frazier said Sunday. Shropshire was reported missing to police around 10 p.m. Friday after he walked away from the area of the Cliffs Apartments.

A passerby spotted Shropshire in the creek between Academy Sports and the Home Depot on Shugart Road around 1 p.m. Sunday.

His body was found partially in the water near the edge of the creek, Frazier said.

Officers pulled him from the water and determined he was dead.

An autopsy has been scheduled at the state crime lab to determine his cause of death as no cause was apparent at the scene, Frazier said.

“There were no obvious injuries to the body and no apparent signs of foul play at the scene where the body was discovered,” Frazier said. “We'll have more when we get the results of the autopsy and toxicology back.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Brian Shirley at 706-278-9085, dial 9 and enter extension 189.
