GBI identifies Norfolk Southern contractor fatally shot by DeKalb deputy

A Norfolk Southern contractor was shot and killed Monday after he attacked a deputy with a pipe wrench, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.
Three DeKalb County sheriff’s deputies were at the Norfolk Southern rail yard in northwest Atlanta to serve Levester Taylor, 39, with a warrant, Miles said.
DeKalb Sheriff Jeff Mann confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that the warrant was for felony child molestation.

At some point, Taylor and the deputies were involved in an altercation, which ended with them firing at Taylor, according to the GBI. The man died at the scene.
Mann said the deputy was hit in the head multiple times and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in fair condition, Channel 2 Action News reported.
The rail yard is in the 1500 block of Marietta Road.

Miles said Taylor worked for ITS ConGlobal, which is contracted by Norfolk Southern.
On its website, the Illinois-based company claims to be “the industry-leading provider of intermodal rail terminal services, auto loading and unloading and container depot services.” It operates at more than 90 facilities with about 3,100 employees.
The GBI was called in to investigate, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
