The man who was killed during an apparent officer-involved shooting Tuesday in Statesboro instead died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to a media report.

Evidence shows that neither of the two shots fired by a Statesboro police officer struck the victim, the Statesboro Herald reported. The paper cited preliminary autopsy reports by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The victim was identified as Olajuwon James, 21, of Hinesville, the paper reported.

James was one of as many as three people involved in a home invasion and armed robbery, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

A second suspect was arrested near the scene, officials said. The involvement of a third person has not been confirmed.

Statesboro is about 210 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
