An Athens mother is accused of running out of her apartment mid-shower and backing over a woman who came to repossess her Nissan Versa.

The 24-year-old, identified by Athens police as Shanita Maryann Smith, allegedly stormed out of her Summerbrook Circle apartment just after 12:30 a.m. last Thursday when she saw two employees from Winder-based C&O Recovery attempt to take her vehicle.

Wearing only a towel, Smith allegedly jumped into the car, threw it in reverse and stepped on the gas, dragging the repo woman a short distance before running over her legs and her right arm, according to an Athens police report.

Smith then crashed into a Toyota SUV parked nearby before speeding off, the report states.

The woman who was allegedly run over had an arrest warrant out of Forsyth County, but she promised to turn herself in after being seen by doctors at the hospital.

Smith told police she never meant to run over the woman, who jumped inside the car and started fighting with her to get control of the vehicle, according to the report. She also told detectives she didn’t know she hit the SUV.

Police allowed Smith, who had three children inside her apartment, to get dressed before taking her to jail.

She was charged with one count of reckless conduct and one count of failure of duty upon striking an unattended vehicle, Clarke County jail records show. She was released after posting a $2,950 bond.
