115-year sentence for Jackson County man who shot mother, fired at police

A Jackson County man who shot his mother in the back last year before turning his gun on a UPS driver and the deputies who came to arrest him was sentenced Thursday to 115 years in prison.
Jonathan Allen was involved in a three-hour standoff with Hall County deputies in June 2018 after shooting his mother and firing rounds at police, authorities said.

Linda Allen, who was shot three times in the back, survived her injuries, Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum said.
The woman called 911, and Hall County SWAT and Georgia State Patrol SWAT were sent to take her son into custody, the sheriff said.
When police arrived to arrest Allen, he continued shooting, striking two patrol cars as deputies ducked for cover, Mangum said.
The deputies returned fire and Allen was struck. He then barricaded himself inside a home, prompting a SWAT standoff with multiple agencies that lasted about three hours.
The Hall County SWAT team eventually shot a flashbang device into the residence and took Allen into custody.

"I'm thankful that my deputies are walking away from this incident,” Mangum told AJC.com last year. “They were fired upon, shots hit their cars and by the grace of God they're OK."
Allen pleaded guilty July 8 to four counts of aggravated assault, three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and one count of third-degree cruelty to children.
The child cruelty charge stems from Allen’s young child being inside the home when the incident occurred, Mangum said.
