Cops: ‘Stare down’ at QuikTrip led to deadly gunfire

The two men didn’t even exchange words inside a Clayton County convenience store. But minutes later, one shot and killed the other, Clayton County police said Wednesday night.

The two were inside the QuikTrip on Ga. 138 shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday when the silent confrontation began, Major Johnny Robinson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The men stared each other down inside the store, then left in separate vehicles, Robinson said.

That’s when shots were fired from a vehicle, striking 24-year-old Stacy Johnson, who was in the backseat of another vehicle, Robinson said. Both vehicles were traveling on Ga. 138 at the time of the shooting, according to police.

Three others were in the same vehicle, but Johnson was the only one hit. He was transported to the hospital, where he died early Monday.

With help from witnesses and surveillance video footage, investigators identified Michael Jordan, of Riverdale, as the suspect. Jordan, who turns 24 on March 11, was located Wednesday in Gwinnett County by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office fugitive squad, according to police.

“Our main goal is to get people like this off the street,” Robinson said at police headquarters Wednesday night. “That’s very frightening to us that people like this are out there.”

Investigators believe the shooting may have been gang-related and are trying to determine if anyone else was in Jordan’s vehicle at the time of the shooting. Police have not yet determined if Jordan and Johnson knew each other.
