A Clayton County man is facing DUI and multiple traffic charges after leading police on a high-speed chase on I-85 North in Newnan on Friday, authorities said.

Newnan police were patrolling the area of Lower Fayetteville Road and the Newnan Crossing Bypass about 4 p.m. when they saw a vehicle speeding, Newnan police Deputy Chief Mark Cooper said in an emailed statement. An officer pursued the vehicle, but the chase was canceled based on police policy for safety reasons, Cooper said.

However, a few minutes later, another officer saw the same man driving recklessly past heavy traffic on a double yellow line, authorities said.

“In accordance with policy, the chase could be reinitiated and a stop was attempted again,” Cooper confirmed.

After passing multiple residential streets at speeds that reached 85 mph, Coweta County deputies took over the pursuit, according to authorities. They followed the man on I-85 North and ended the chase after a successful PIT maneuver at Exit 47, Cooper said.

He added that the man, who is not being named at the moment, is facing charges of DUI, reckless driving and various traffic violations.
