The owners of a Cherokee County kennel arrested last summer after hundreds of dogs were found living in filth have been sentenced to 25 years on probation after pleading guilty to a portion of the animal cruelty charges filed against them, a local news site reported.
Guerry Wise, 80, and his wife Joy Wise, 63, were sentenced last week by Cherokee County State Court Judge Alan Jordan, according to Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch.
The two entered guilty pleas to 25 counts of animal cruelty. They were initially charged with 366 misdemeanor cruelty counts. Prosecutors agreed not to pursue the remaining counts.
The case was investigated by the Cherokee County Marshal’s Office.
“It was horrible,” Marshal’s Office spokeswoman Alexa Huston said of the conditions the dogs were found in on July 15 at the Heavenly Kennel on Cumming Highway.
“The dogs were being kept in unsanitary conditions and housed in cages,” she said. “Underneath most of the cages were feces, urine and dog food that had fallen through the grates.”
