A 79-year-old woman is dead and three people are recovering after a crash in Athens.

When officers responded to the scene about 5 p.m. Saturday, they learned a 2004 Ford F-150 hit a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice, lost control and was struck by a 2019 Toyota RAV4, Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Lt. John A. Radford Jr. said.

According to police, the truck was traveling north on Jefferson River Road and approaching South Ridge Drive when the Caprice pulled into the road. The truck hit the car, causing minor damage to the Caprice. The driver was not injured.

The truck began to slide as a result of the collision, and the southbound Toyota hit it on the passenger side. Both vehicles came to rest very near the point of impact.

The passenger in the Toyota, Violet Sprinkles of Nicholson, was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The collision left the drivers of both vehicles and the passenger in the truck with injuries. While the driver of the Toyota was taken to a hospital, it is not clear if the occupants of the truck required treatment.
